Exclusive news : a Phish video game !

by Yome NetSan 29. March 2011

Part of my job as a web developper is that the company I work for/in change after each project. This way, I get to know different people and way to work depending of the size of the company. That’s why I work in a city 150 km from my house since november 2010.
One of my new co-worker has lived in Los Angeles for several years and still have many friends in the US. After asking her if she had someone who can get my the 3 limited editon vinyls from Phish and Mike Gordon released for the Record Store Day, she came back to me with some incredible news.
When she lived there, she actually befriended someone who recently moved to Massachusetts to work at Harmonix, Rock Band video games creators. This person was so surprised to know that a guy in France love Phish so much he ask half the planet to get 3 discs from Los Angeles, he when pretty talky about a current project in his company :
Rock Band : Phish !

I’ll try to get more informations about this in the following days because all that I know is that the game is planned to be released simultaneously with a very anticipated DVD/BluRay boxset from a very very famous show...

Immediately following their 1999 U.S. summer tour, Phish traveled abroad for their first ever shows in Japan. Fuji Rock Festival took place on multiple stages and the festival had specially designed the "Field Of Heaven" stage for Phish to play three consecutive nights of complete, two-set headline shows.

This release features Phish’s entire show from July 31, 1999 – the middle, Saturday night as well as “What’s The Use?” from their soundcheck on July 29th. The July 31st show crackled with energy, intermingling classic and new material with an exploratory vibe that meshed with the atmosphere of respect and beauty.

Set one had many high points including standout performances of “My Friend, My Friend”, “Back On The Train”, “Limb By Limb” and “Character Zero”. Set two started in the stratosphere with a “2001” > “David Bowie” opener that proved the most experimental music played at Fuji Rock transposed against the gentle beauty of “Wading In The Velvet Sea”. Set two also featured one of the all-time great renditions of “Prince Caspian”, a smoking “Fluffhead” and mystical “Simple”. The encore provided a chance for friend and fellow musician Nawang Khechog to address the crowd about Tibetan human rights and perform with Fish on vacuum for a meditative jam with Fish and with the whole band on flute for a special “Brian And Robert”. Japan proved a perfect host for Phish, the Field Of Heaven has survived ever since as part of Fuji Rock Festival and Phish has maintained a strong connection with Japan, weaving Japanese lyrics into “The Meatstick” as recently as New Year’s Eve 2010-2011.

In the past, charitable downloads at LivePhish.com have raised over $100,000 for four non-profits: the Harbor House of New Jersey (The Headphones Jam), the New Orleans Musician's Clinic, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fund (Katrina Relief) and the American Red Cross (Haiti Relief). Additionally, the Mockingbird Foundation receives funding on an on-going basis from the proceeds at LivePhish.com.

Phrench Poker Magazine

by Yome NetSan 14. February 2011

I don't play poker (or every once in a while), yet this morning I bought a poker magazine, Poker 52. Indeed, it has Phish in it.

2 pages about Phish in a french magazine is very rare, and it's even more surprising it arrives in a poker magazine. The author is a regular writer in this magazine and, this time, the editor picked an article about our favorite band, we must salute the effort.

The story is about a fan's travel from Bruxels, Belgium, to Madison Square Garden, New York, for the NYE Run.
At the beggining, he has already missed the first show in Worcester but plan to arrive at New York then rent a car to drive to north east for the 28th december concert.
But due to bad weather, his flight is canceled. Several options are sugested by the company like a direct flight that arrive on January the 1st or another to land late on the 30th.
Finally, his trip goes like this : Bruxels > London [3h wait] > Chicago [3h wait] > Boston [landing at 1.30am] > 5h Drive to New York on the 30th.

The original article (in french) can be read on the author's blog here : http://benjodimeo.blogspot.com/2010/12/gone-phishin.html

Thanks to Coventry Blog for the story.

Online Phish Tour made two great posts about the distance you have to travel to see Phish this fall and since they came back last year.

You can read it thought here and here.

An interresting analysis with many maps but clearly uncomplete.

So let me add another piece to this analysis, with a more global scale...

Phish 3D Movie - European Screening

by Holger 11. April 2010

There is some hope to see the Phish 3D Movie in Europe. Rights are owned by Sony as I learned. I have contacted all major cinema chains with 3D theatres and asked for the movie. UCI and Cinestar answers were negative but Cinemaxx told me that they are in negotiations to screen it at least in some big cities in selected theatres. Although the tracklist of the movie has not been published yet it looks like it is a mix of all days and all sets. In total it will contain 29 songs whereas only 4 will be from the Halloween musical costume "Exile on Main St." by the Rolling Stones. I will keep you updated once plans for German screenings get confirmed.

Wife's words

by Yome NetSan 30. March 2010

My wife doesn't care about Phish, at all. In french : "Elle s'en fiche" (yes, pronounced like the band).

She can't stand the instrumental parts of a song, written or improvised. Of course, she never listened to Phish by herself. When I put a CD in the car, that's when she's about to sleep during a long drive. After the ride, she tells me she couldn't sleep because of the noise...
Although she doesn't share my passion, she understand I can love this music and politely listen when I told her a Phish story, even with my habit of making a short story a verrrrrrry long one.

Beside all of that, every once in a while, she amaze me with her knowloedge about the band
She can name every band member with his main instrument and even describe them and recognize them on pictures.
"John Fishman is the one with the dress and the vaccum."
"Trey Anastasio is the one with the glasses, the beard and the hair who looks like you."
(Indeed, the '94 Trey shares a little ressemblance with the younger me)
"Mike Gordon is the one with the cosmonaut helmet." (refering to the Inside In cover)
"Page McConnell is the one with the piano."

She can list some song's or album's name :
"The best Phish song is Mmmmh Bop." (Athough I've already listened to this cover and I knew when and where it took place, she is the one who find me this video)
"Hey ! It's Phish on the radio !!" (Consequence of the previous statements. Yeald every time she heard a Hanson song on the radio)
"The most famous Phish song is Waste." (because it's the one which pops up the most on Youtube)
"The album I bought to you in Valence is the one with the moon on it and it's called Frampton House." (She mixed up Farmhouse, which is the one she bought, and Hampton is Alive, because I told her the reference to Frampton is Alive.

One day, we were joking about that and I asked her to name me some Phish songs. She went with "They must have a song with [insert random word] in it" and every word she said was indeed in a song's title !
After second thought, I realized that, with more than 250 orignal songs and more than 500 covers played, they sure have at least one song for most of the english words in the dictionary !

She has her own view on Phish concerts :
"They play vacuum to bring mid-aged women."
"They are so infamous that they have to play covers to be catchy."
"They don't have enough memory to remember their songs so they improvise." (In a way, that's a rather true statement about the 2004 Phish)
"They invent a new concept : disposable songs" (Because they played many songs only once)

She also has a percular opinion on Phish's music :
"Phish basically plays country." (Maybe because, when we are together, I choose songs that could please her and so often play My Sweet One, Scent of a Mule, Poor Heart, My Mind got a Mind of it's Own, Nally Kane, Sparlke, Water in the Sky...)
"Hey ! It's Phish on the radio !!" (Again, a consequence of the previous statements. Yeald every time she heard a country song on the radio)
"Every Phish song is high pitched notes (often played at the guitar) over random sounds in the background"
"Why didn't you make me listen to good Phish songs before ?" (while finding a studio version of Free on Youtube)

She says that Phish is all about food :
"They have many songs about food : cheesecake, something with Meat..."
"They must have another song with the word 'corn' in it because they play country music... oops no, it would be the case if they played 'pop' music !"
"They even have an ice cream named after them : Ben 'n Jerry's Phish Food !"

Of course, she says all of that just to have fun with me. She also says that sailing is not a sport...

What about you ? what are your wife/friends/children words about your favorite band or your dedication ?
