Read the book(s)

This summer has been a quiet one. I haven't got the chance to start listening to Phish's tour before it ended neither the several vinyl records I bought since April. But I've read quite a lot and some of the books I dove into have been related to our band.

 

Fare Thee Well

After finally buying the huge Fare Thee Well 12 CD / 7 BluRay "Complete" box (still missing the Santa Clara shows, where the lyrics "Fare Thee Well" have been sung), I added to my shelves the accompagning book.

It's a beautiful coffee-table kind of book with a lot of beautiful pictures. Seriously, the production of the concerts and the talent of the photographers have done wonders. I received it in the morning of the day I flew to my vacation in Morocco, so I have left to dive deeper in those lights.

I also bought a book I've been willing to read for a long time : David ''Zzyzx'' Steinberg's "This has all been wonderful". Everybody know for sure Zzyzx's website for Phish statistics but not as many know that the guy wrote a book about his summer 1994 tour, "the year Phish became Phish".

The book isn't very long but I haven't begun it yet. I hope it will immerge me in the 94 scene with description of the lot and the fans more than the actual music. We'll see...

A Live One (33 1/3)

I've been intrigued by this book since it came out last september. It's part of the 33 1/3 series of Bloomsbury Publishing where each book focuses on a particular record. The series counts more than a hundred books and I already ordered several more like Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Michael Jackson's Dangerous and, more surprising, Koji Kondo's Super Mario Bros. Soundtrack.

A Live One is written by Walter Holland, a long time Phish fan. It explores each track of the double album with some thoughts about the history of the band and the evolution of their sound. It's sometimes quite complicated to read because of the technical and musical notions involved, especially for a non native english speaking person like me. But it's very well written and interresting. It can open up a new way to listen to a jam and it certainly pushed me to listen to this great live album once again.

 

The Phish Companion (Third Edition)

But if there must be only ONE book to read (except for the Helping Friendly one of course) it's The Phish Companion.

I have the first and second editions for years and I've been waiting for this one for a long time. It has been actually announced and available to pre-order more than three years ago. But the book have been completly re-worked and it's been released independently by the Mockingbird Foundation in June 2016. 

The biggest modification is the organization of the book. Where the first two had several sections (setlists, songs, interviews...), this new version compiles everything chronologicaly from 1983 to 2016. Histories of each song are sprinkled after the show it appeared first. It can be puzzling at first but it's finally the best way to read the book very naturally, from start to finish. There is still an index at the end of the book to find directly the history of the song you want.

It's sold at 39$ on the official website (phishcompanion.com) but the international shipping are way too expensive. The only thing that I miss from getting the book directly from the Mockingbird Foundation is the rad package with written in big letters "READ THE BOOK" (as seen on Holger's pictures). It has then been available on Dry Goods and then Amazon some time later at 49$ (the retail price) with varied shipping fees. That's why I received it in the same parcel as Fare Thee Well right before leaving to Morocco. But unlike the other book, I find a blank space for it in my luggage !

I read it avidly during my holidays and it's a hell of a good read. Pictures are in full colors and the printing is beautiful. In the end, the two past edition avidly s look very amateur-ish in comparaison. Each fan should really get their hands on a copy.

A few days before I left, phish.net announced a contest where you had to take a picture of the book in a remote place or with a nice setting and post it on the Internet with the hashtag #ReadTheBook. That's the kind of challenge that I like, without thinking of winning, just to have fun.

I started taking pictures of the companion on the beach. Ok, they aren't very creative, even if you see the "Sand" history on the page... So I've posted only the first one.

I wanted a picture of me reading it in the ocean, on my bodyboard. With the help of my wife, we took several photos and I had a hard time choosing the one I would send

The funny thing is that I opened the book at random to pose for the picture and find myself on the page of "Wading in the Velvet Sea"...

Then my wife took the rein with some good ideas.

The first one was having my shadow reading the book in the sand. A clever idea but not really fulfilled in the end.
The second one was more elaborated and needed some settings. The idea was to dry the book like a T-shirt and a wetsuit with a surf board in the background. I like that one a lot but after posting it on Twitter, I realized the book wasn't clearly visible after all.

While up on the roof of the house for the previous photo, I took some more with the landscape of roofs in the background. I posted the one with the tree but not the other one because I didn't like the light, even if you can see the ocean in the distance.

And then there's a last one I took very quickly without really thinking of it, one day before leaving the beach. We were sun bathing and reading right next to this life buoy but I only thought of using it in a photo at the last moment.

I was about to publish this article yesterday when I've received a message from Phillip Zerbo, editor of the Phish Companion. And guess what ? I won third place in the contest with this one !! I later saw in the phish.net post the other winners' great photos. Happy ending !

After a great Fare The Well and a spectacular Summer tour, the end of the year sounded a little too quite. But that was before I received lots of good LPs to spin...

 

New Year's Eve 1995:
Live At Madison Square Garden

 

Originaly released on 3 CD in 2005, Phish's New Year's Eve 1995 show made its way again to independent record stores on 6 LPs during the Record Store Day on 18th april 2015. This huge boxset is limited to 4500 copies and costs an arm. Of course, no store in France had it and it popped pretty quickly on eBay. Due to its already hish-sky price, scalpers can't charge much more but I've been reluctant to buy one of them over here. I waited several month to see if it would appear on Dry Goods but in september, I've been told by my contact at Phish Inc. that it won't be sold there. Thanksfully, this person managed to got me one of the remaning copies and sold it to me ! I finally received it on the 20th november, around the same time as the other vinyls bellow. But surprisingly, it ended on the Phish merchandise site on 3th december ! Grab it while you can !

The boxset is rather simple but quite nice. With six 12" discs, it's huge and, of course, heavy. It's also my first and only 6 LPs boxset. My second biggest one is David Gilmour's Live in Gdansk with 5 LPs.
All pictures and texts are taken from the original CD boxset but re-arranged on six sleeves and a leaflet. A download card is also included and, if you're lucky (if you're the first one actually), you can use mine : just find it on the pictures. One strange thing : the image used by Phish in february to hint at this release (a green square with the words "Side K : you Enjoy Myself"), isn't part of the boxset at all. Actually, the only green things on it are the tittle's letters and side numbers on the outside of the box.

I haven't got the chance to isolate myself for more than three and a half hours yet to proper listen to the music. I haven't listened to the show for many year actually as I haven't been impressed the first time I heard it. Maybe my expectations were too high knowing that Rolling Stone Magazine named it one of the "Greatest Concerts of the '90s", or maybe I wasn't in a good mood...

Rift (Blue & Black Editions)

 

Announced shorty before the summer, the second Phish vinyl of the year was Rift, their fourth studio album from 1993.

Two versions of this one have been made : the "Festival edition" and the "regular" one. The original release was at the Magnaball Festival on 21st august 2015. This edition comes with two translucide-blue discs and a new print from David Welker, the original cover's artist. A second version with black LPs and without the print was to be available on Dry Goods later in September, but the announcement text wasn't clear if the blue one will also be buyable online.

On site at the festival was the JEMP Record store, featuring listening booths to enjoy vinyls from Phish and solo projects, even NYE 95. My friend Stephen from Amsterdam got us in touch with Eric, an american fan who would attend the festival, and he aggreed to buy us vinyls there and send them to us. After many adventures with post offices, shipping fees, Paypal and customs, the package finally arrived in Europe last week. Meanwhile, the album has been sold on Dry Goods, even a few blue ones, and I grabbed the black version over there.

The sound on this one is phenomenal ! I heard bits here and there that I've never noticed on the CD I have for years (it was the third one I had, in 1998). The packaging is rather standard but it's always a pleasure to have a bigger version of a cover, especialy such a beauty ! The translucent blue discs are beautiful. I also really like the new David Welker illustration. It's a follow-up to the original cover art that can be watch from every angle, with a lot of details. I framed it like I did for the Pollock's Junta poster and it'll go well beside the jigsaw puzzle of the original art !

 

Trey Anastasio : Paper Wheels

 

Trey Anastasio's new album, Paper Wheels, took its time to come : I remember downloading the first song (Bounce) back in October 2014 and I got the 7" single for Record Store Day in April.

It finally hit shelves at the end of October 2015 with a gorgeous limited vinyl edition. This never-before-seen package is totally awesome. The gatefold cover is full of 25 holes on each side that let see through, down to the actual discs. Indeed, each "sleeve" is made of several smaller sleeves with a rounded hole in the center and they are imbricated one into the other. The result is a kaleidoscopic visual that move when you get the disc out. Moreover, there are writings around the little holes of the gatefold, but on the inside ! That's very original but not that easy to read.

That's the only main drawback of this breath-taking packaging : it's beautiful but fragile and not that practical. One must grab and open it delicately to prevent any damage.

Another surprise comes with the discs themselves.

They are color splatted and look really nice too. But unlike most 12" discs, they play at 45 RPM like 7" so, technically, the sound is better than on a 33 RPM LP.

And it does a great job with this album. The compositions are typically Trey-ish instead of Phish-ish. They have been recorded mostly live and it sounds, like with the tempo-change of Bounce.

On the title track, Natalie "Chainsaw" Cressman made a funny monologue in french ! Her accent is adorable and the text is complete non-sense. I was with my child when I first listened to it and he chuckled when he heard french for the first time after 9 songs in english.

Some sentence aren't proper french or has gramatical errors (like "Avant que je suis parti pour le tour" which would translate to "Before I am left for the tour") but it's actually part of the charm.

Medeski, Martin & Wood :
Radiolarians - The Evolutionary Set

 

Another not-so-related-to-Phish-but-still arrival happened in november : Radiolans - The Evolutionary Set.

Radiolans is a project by Medeski, Martin and Wood from 2008/2009. It was a series of three tours, each one centered around new music that would be recorded after beeing played on stage : "The plan: Write > Tour > Record > Repeat."

The three CDs released in 2008 have been compiled on this Evolutionary Set with bonus materials, a remix CD, a live CD, a documentary DVD and a double LP.

I've been looking for this for a good price since its release in 2009 so I was psyched to finally put my hands on it this year. I really like the design of this set and the improvised-feeling of the music.

MMW have been the first band discovered thanks to Phish that I've seen in a concert at the Jazz à Vienne Festival in 2005.

 

Holly Bowling's Tahoe Tweezer

 

Last but not least, I received on monday the vinyl version of Holly Bownling's Tahoe Tweezer.

The monstruous jam have been famous in the community since 2013 and althought it didn't impressed me at first (maybe I've over-heard of it before actually listened to it, and I've prefered other jams in 2012/2013 and even more in 2014/2015), I have to admit it's a great piece of music and band/crowd communion.

Classically-trained pianist Holly did a fantastic work as transcribing it to solo piano and, since its debut in 2014, her interpretation has become almost as famous as the original. She hasn't stick with this 35 minutes work and has expand her repertoire with many other Phish songs or jams arranged for solo piano (even my first-show-ever Down with Disease Reading Jam). She started a campaign on Pledge Music in april to gather funds for her first album including songs on the first disc and three jams on the second one. Now she's doing concerts all around the United States and is incorporating Grateful Dead jams to her sets.

I instantly jumped on the "Pleadge" button with a "Shut up and take my money" kind of reaction and received the CDs in late august. Now, the Tahoe Tweezer sits near my turntable on a nice blue 12" disc and I can't wait to make it spin.

Siket Disc

 

The year 2015 will end (or most likely, the year 2016 will begin) with another fine Phish release on vinyl : The Siket Disc.

I didn't expect this one, or at least not that early, but it's a very good surprise ! Those studoi outakes are some of my favorite musics by any artist.

I can't wait to blast What's the Use out loud on my new sound system !

I think I have a rather big Phish collection but I don't often show the items I buy. So here are some of the last Phish related vinyls and discs I recently received.

The last Marco Benevento record is as good as the previous ones is not better. Moreover Mike Gordon plays bass and mandolin on Escape Horse, a tune already released last year as a limited 7" disc.

Like most of us, I discovered Jennifer Hartswick with TAB, but the girl really need more recognition for his solo work. All of her 3 albums are absolutely great, very jazzy and funky, and her contribution to Everyone Orchestra's first studio album makes it feel like one of her own.

Yes, I finally got my hand on both editions for a resonnable price. The regular one will stay sealed but I opened the other to frame the Pollock print. It looks gorgeous in my living room. The sound of the vinyl is clean and loud. I've re discovered the album with this print.

I've already told about the music before and the packaging of the CD is rather regular.

 

The last Trey record is a tough one. I'm not really convinced after two listenings but some songs are great like Land of Nod and Scabbard and Clint Eastwood (thank you Jen). The overal sound is a little "over produced" to my ears. I mean that there are too many sounds mixed together and it sounds blury. Trey's voice is often overdubbed or too much reverbed. It's like the opposite of Joy which sounds too much like a live album recorded in studio.

 

On a side note, you can see that I gave Dry Goods and Music Today a second chance. I recently made several orders with those discs and other items (like this USB flash drive, that Fishman hat, this second edition 12" and a sealed 7" which makes me have another unboxed 7").
The shipping fees are cheaper than before, calculated with more accurency but still rather expensive. The package is also better but I've seen far better (I can compare with a lot of parcels I receive on a regular basis). Finally, the shipping is much faster than before and that's a good thing.
I also have another order on the way for December (Star Lake 98 DVD with CD and T-Shirt along with Fishman's styled mug and bandana) even if I'll have a couple review copies to make another contest.

A new live release from Phish, the palace of funk

Just like last year late announcement during the New York webcast, Phish's brand new show from taken from the archives was announced last week for a release this very tuesday.
December 6 1997 The Palace at Auburn Hills is another installment of the famed "Phish Destroys America" fall 1997 tour. livephish.com has already officialy released a lot of shows from this tour like the next day show in Dayton, the one from Denver as Volume 11, last year's 3 shows boxset Hampton/Winston-Salem or 2 concerts from New Year's Run at Madison Square Garden (12/29 et 12/30).

As strange as it may seems, for someone like me who discovered Phish in 1997 and who downloaded countless tapes for the 97/98 era, I'm totally new to this show. I've never heard of the "Tweezabella" from Set 2 before last week, so it's with a virgin state of mind that I woke up this morning at around 6 AM to download my daily phix.

The first set starts oddly like a reversed set 2 with Golgi Apparatus and Run Like An Antelope. The second song already sets the tone for the night when you didn't expect it with a 10 minutes improvisation that goes seamlessly from funk to rock.
Train Song provides the first rest before the boys alternate big funky combos (Bathtub Gin > Foam and Fee > Maze) with fast rocking numbers (Sample in a Jar and Cavern).
The quiet little jam out of Fee merges into the intro of a Trey-leaded Maze that goes in every directions and ends in a big peak before coming back to the quiet outro. Roller-coaster style.

As soon as you hear the unusual first seconds of Tweezer, you know a monster is coming. The intro is slowly built with scratch-like sounds from Page and menacing bass from Mike. After about 6 minutes, the funky jam really starts with more scratchy sounds and it keeps on growing patiently until it sounds like Moma Dance. That's when Trey adds loops to the mix and the overall sound becomes more spacy while anchored by Mike's bass. The guitar riffs above the soundscape go harder and harder until things start to soften a little bit for the band... but not for Trey who continues his hard-rock sounding solo without altering the flow of the jam, leading Phish to... Izabella ! Another perfectly-perfect segue !
The guitar-fest continues but 4 minutes into the Jimi Hendrix anthem it morphs into a Page-leaded funk, ponctuated by Trey and Fish's screams and supported by Mike's imaginative bass lines. The following jam is amazing with start/stops, keys/bass duel, guitar solo and bass/drums break down. Full funk madness !
Finally, Trey throws the intro of Twist like it's just another of his funk licks. The segue is a little more forced thant the others but still sounds great. The first lyrics of the song are sung quietly, almost like if they were about to wisper, until Trey calls "Leo !" for a unusually placed keyboard solo. The following improvised segment leaves a great place for Mike's envelopped bass while the boys sang "One twist around that way".
The song ends quietly with piano leading to a slowly-built Piper, the first vocals appearing only at the 3 minutes mark. The jam goes almost ambient for a while before fading out into... Sleeping Monkey, which is a nice way to calm down things after this non-stop extravaganza and before the raging Tweezer Reprise that ends the set.

The encore close the show in a full Phish fashion with a fast, funny and short Rocky Top.

Taken from Paul Langedoc's stereo soundboard recording, Fred Kevorkian re-mastering sounds loud, wide and deep. The bass is strong and every single note is crystal clear like you would expect.

Between heavy funk and hard rocking solos, this new livephish release is really a must-hear. But now I'll go on all listen (again) to the following concert at Dayton...

By 1994, Phish was well established as an international touring act and already well known to a growing group of hardcore fans. Amidst a tour packed with highlights - it was this summer that convinced the band to start multi-tracking their live shows - this show was recorded for posterity on 2-track DAT. Lightning rarely strikes twice in the same place but Chicago '94 is an example of just that.

Paul Languedoc's stereo soundboard mixes re-mastered by Fred Kevorkian carry the intensity and intricacy of these special shows to listeners' ears eighteen years later. Chicago '94 contains nearly six hours of music performed at both shows for a total of 43 songs, including material from the UIC soundchecks. The shows are presented in a 6-CD box set with new artwork by longtime collaborator and Chicagoan, Jim Pollock.

You sure may already know but Phish will release a 7 CDs/3 shows boxset in december. Pre-order packages are already on Dry Goods and livephish.com.

I'm totally new to these 3 shows (Hampton Coliseum 11/21-22/1997 and Winston-Salem 11/23/1997) because at the time, I've know Phish for only 3 mounth and I thought they were disbanded for long. Later I listend to every Phish era, including 1997 but strangly enough I've never been aware of the fame of these concerts.

This morning, I listened for the first time for the Mike's Groove played at the beginning of the first Hampton show and my ears actually melted ! It's so full of groove and funk ! Mike's Song only has 4 distinctive jams, one of it based on a heavy Black-Eyed Katty tease ! The segue to Hydrogen is so smooth you don't hear it coming.

In the midst of their legendary fall 1997 tour, Phish stopped in Dixie for two shows in Virginia and one in North Carolina.  The 1997 Hampton Coliseum shows were the band's first two-night stand at Hampton Coliseum – a venue they have played a total of fifteen times including a two-night stand in 1998 (released as Hampton Comes Alive) and a trio of reunion shows in 2009.  The shape and feel of the venue have earned it the nickname “The Mothership” among fans.  The next show after Hampton 1997 took place at Lawrence Joel Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina - another familiar venue where Phish also performed in 1994, 1995 and 1998.

These three shows were a memorable triad for the band and fans.  They are among the most requested shows for soundboard release from the Phish Archives and make up a compelling slice of the twenty-two-show tour that stretched from Las Vegas to Albany.  The Hampton/Winston-Salem 97 shows were packed with notable renditions of classics including “Split Open And Melt”, “AC/DC Bag”, “Slave To The Traffic Light”, “Mike’s Song”, “Halley's Comet”, “Tweezer”, “Run Like An Antelope”, “Stash” and “Bathtub Gin”.  The band also showcased a wide variety of newer covers from the debut of the Rolling Stones' “Emotional Rescue” to Del McCoury's “Beauty Of My Dreams”, Jimi Hendrix's “Izabella”, Clifton Chenier's “My Soul” and even an impromptu take on War's “Low Rider” (sandwiched inside a blazing “Down With Disease”).  The Hampton/Winston-Salem 97 shows also showcased newer originals like “Dogs Stole Things”, “Ghost”, “Piper” and the brand-new-for-fall instrumental “Black-Eyed Katy”, which is the only song repeated on the release.  More than what was played, the sheer heights of these performances are what made them special and built their acclaim.

The Hampton/Winston-Salem 97 shows featured Phish at an emotional peak of execution and flow.  The band was hooking up at every turn, taking chances and dropping musical surprises for each other and the audience.  Throughout these shows, Phish seized most every opportunity to lift and expand their repertoire while maintaining a raging dance party at every turn.  The audience magnified this explosive energy, spinning the shows into a ball of psychedelic, funk-infused live Phish for the ages.  Paul Languedoc’s stereo “soundboard” mix re-mastered by Fred Kevorkian funnels the energy of these special shows to listeners' ears nearly fifteen years later.  Hampton/Winston-Salem 97 contains all the music played over these three shows for a total of 45 songs - over 8 hours of music - including never-before-heard material from soundchecks at both venues.  The 7-CD boxed set (also available as downloads at livephish.com) slated for release December 6, 2011 is a must-own collection for any Phish fan.

Japan Relief by Phish : Help Japan and listen to great music !

In response to the recent earthquake and tsunami that the people of the northeastern part of Japan have endured JEMP Records is releasing "7/31/99, Field of Heaven, Fuji Rock Festival, Niigata, JAPAN" as benefit CD & download at Phish Dry Goods and livephish.com to benefit Peace Winds America http://peacewindsamerica.org. 100% of the funds Peace Winds America collects for disaster relief will go to support operations through their sister organization, Peace Winds Japan. Relief operations began March 15th and are currently underway in Miuyagi Prefecture, where Peace Winds is on the ground providing food, clothing, medicines and temporary shelter to survivors of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

7/31/99 was recorded by Paul Languedoc and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. We'd like to thank Fred and the folks at Nugs.net and Music Today for donating their efforts to this cause.

Immediately following their 1999 U.S. summer tour, Phish traveled abroad for their first ever shows in Japan. Fuji Rock Festival took place on multiple stages and the festival had specially designed the "Field Of Heaven" stage for Phish to play three consecutive nights of complete, two-set headline shows.

This release features Phish’s entire show from July 31, 1999 – the middle, Saturday night as well as “What’s The Use?” from their soundcheck on July 29th. The July 31st show crackled with energy, intermingling classic and new material with an exploratory vibe that meshed with the atmosphere of respect and beauty.

Set one had many high points including standout performances of “My Friend, My Friend”, “Back On The Train”, “Limb By Limb” and “Character Zero”. Set two started in the stratosphere with a “2001” > “David Bowie” opener that proved the most experimental music played at Fuji Rock transposed against the gentle beauty of “Wading In The Velvet Sea”. Set two also featured one of the all-time great renditions of “Prince Caspian”, a smoking “Fluffhead” and mystical “Simple”. The encore provided a chance for friend and fellow musician Nawang Khechog to address the crowd about Tibetan human rights and perform with Fish on vacuum for a meditative jam with Fish and with the whole band on flute for a special “Brian And Robert”. Japan proved a perfect host for Phish, the Field Of Heaven has survived ever since as part of Fuji Rock Festival and Phish has maintained a strong connection with Japan, weaving Japanese lyrics into “The Meatstick” as recently as New Year’s Eve 2010-2011.

In the past, charitable downloads at LivePhish.com have raised over $100,000 for four non-profits: the Harbor House of New Jersey (The Headphones Jam), the New Orleans Musician's Clinic, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fund (Katrina Relief) and the American Red Cross (Haiti Relief). Additionally, the Mockingbird Foundation receives funding on an on-going basis from the proceeds at LivePhish.com.
