Let's spin !

by Yome NetSan 4. December 2015

After a great Fare The Well and a spectacular Summer tour, the end of the year sounded a little too quite. But that was before I received lots of good LPs to spin...

New Year's Eve 1995:
Live At Madison Square Garden

Originaly released on 3 CD in 2005, Phish's New Year's Eve 1995 show made its way again to independent record stores on 6 LPs during the Record Store Day on 18th april 2015. This huge boxset is limited to 4500 copies and costs an arm. Of course, no store in France had it and it popped pretty quickly on eBay. Due to its already hish-sky price, scalpers can't charge much more but I've been reluctant to buy one of them over here. I waited several month to see if it would appear on Dry Goods but in september, I've been told by my contact at Phish Inc. that it won't be sold there. Thanksfully, this person managed to got me one of the remaning copies and sold it to me ! I finally received it on the 20th november, around the same time as the other vinyls bellow. But surprisingly, it ended on the Phish merchandise site on 3th december ! Grab it while you can !

The boxset is rather simple but quite nice. With six 12" discs, it's huge and, of course, heavy. It's also my first and only 6 LPs boxset. My second biggest one is David Gilmour's Live in Gdansk with 5 LPs.
All pictures and texts are taken from the original CD boxset but re-arranged on six sleeves and a leaflet. A download card is also included and, if you're lucky (if you're the first one actually), you can use mine : just find it on the pictures. One strange thing : the image used by Phish in february to hint at this release (a green square with the words "Side K : you Enjoy Myself"), isn't part of the boxset at all. Actually, the only green things on it are the tittle's letters and side numbers on the outside of the box.

I haven't got the chance to isolate myself for more than three and a half hours yet to proper listen to the music. I haven't listened to the show for many year actually as I haven't been impressed the first time I heard it. Maybe my expectations were too high knowing that Rolling Stone Magazine named it one of the "Greatest Concerts of the '90s", or maybe I wasn't in a good mood...

Rift (Blue & Black Editions)

Announced shorty before the summer, the second Phish vinyl of the year was Rift, their fourth studio album from 1993.

Two versions of this one have been made : the "Festival edition" and the "regular" one. The original release was at the Magnaball Festival on 21st august 2015. This edition comes with two translucide-blue discs and a new print from David Welker, the original cover's artist. A second version with black LPs and without the print was to be available on Dry Goods later in September, but the announcement text wasn't clear if the blue one will also be buyable online.

On site at the festival was the JEMP Record store, featuring listening booths to enjoy vinyls from Phish and solo projects, even NYE 95. My friend Stephen from Amsterdam got us in touch with Eric, an american fan who would attend the festival, and he aggreed to buy us vinyls there and send them to us. After many adventures with post offices, shipping fees, Paypal and customs, the package finally arrived in Europe last week. Meanwhile, the album has been sold on Dry Goods, even a few blue ones, and I grabbed the black version over there.

The sound on this one is phenomenal ! I heard bits here and there that I've never noticed on the CD I have for years (it was the third one I had, in 1998). The packaging is rather standard but it's always a pleasure to have a bigger version of a cover, especialy such a beauty ! The translucent blue discs are beautiful. I also really like the new David Welker illustration. It's a follow-up to the original cover art that can be watch from every angle, with a lot of details. I framed it like I did for the Pollock's Junta poster and it'll go well beside the jigsaw puzzle of the original art !

Trey Anastasio : Paper Wheels

Trey Anastasio's new album, Paper Wheels, took its time to come : I remember downloading the first song (Bounce) back in October 2014 and I got the 7" single for Record Store Day in April.

It finally hit shelves at the end of October 2015 with a gorgeous limited vinyl edition. This never-before-seen package is totally awesome. The gatefold cover is full of 25 holes on each side that let see through, down to the actual discs. Indeed, each "sleeve" is made of several smaller sleeves with a rounded hole in the center and they are imbricated one into the other. The result is a kaleidoscopic visual that move when you get the disc out. Moreover, there are writings around the little holes of the gatefold, but on the inside ! That's very original but not that easy to read.

That's the only main drawback of this breath-taking packaging : it's beautiful but fragile and not that practical. One must grab and open it delicately to prevent any damage.

Another surprise comes with the discs themselves.

They are color splatted and look really nice too. But unlike most 12" discs, they play at 45 RPM like 7" so, technically, the sound is better than on a 33 RPM LP.

And it does a great job with this album. The compositions are typically Trey-ish instead of Phish-ish. They have been recorded mostly live and it sounds, like with the tempo-change of Bounce.

On the title track, Natalie "Chainsaw" Cressman made a funny monologue in french ! Her accent is adorable and the text is complete non-sense. I was with my child when I first listened to it and he chuckled when he heard french for the first time after 9 songs in english.

Here is my translation of the speech and a translation :

Salut mes collègues américaines.
Moi, je suis la tronçonneuse.
Quand j'étais petit, j'avais un ami imaginaire :
le cochon vert.
Il était très grand et... et il vous ressemble un peu.
Avant que je suis parti pour le tour,
un ivrogne a cambriolé ma maison
et a fait pipi dans mes bottes de neige.
C'est vrai, j'ai promis !
J'ai dû les jeter.
C'était si dégueulasse.
Quel dommage.
C'est complètement nul !
Quel dommage !
C'est un vrai con qui m'a fait ça.
C'est complètement nul !
Putain de merde !
C'est des conneries !
Je souffre !
C'est un vrai con qui m'a fait ça.
Casse toi ! Ivrogne !
Hi my fellow Americans.
I am the chainsaw.
When I was little, I had an imaginary friend :
the green pig.
He was very tall and... and he looks a little like you.
Before I left for the tour,
A drunkard has burgled my house
And peed in my snow boots.
It's true, I promise !
I had to throw them away.
It was so swinish.
What a pity.
It totally sucks !
What a pity.
It's a real jerk who did this to me.
It totally sucks !
fuckin shit ! (Holy Shit !)
It's bullshit !
I am suffering !
It's a real jerk who did this to me.
Get out ! Drunkard !

Some sentence aren't proper french or has gramatical errors (like "Avant que je suis parti pour le tour" which would translate to "Before I am left for the tour") but it's actually part of the charm.

By the way, Natalie has a kickstarter underway for her new EP : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/299666408/natalie-cressman-releases-the-traces-ep
You should check it out, she makes good music and cookies too !

Medeski, Martin & Wood :
Radiolarians - The Evolutionary Set

Another not-so-related-to-Phish-but-still arrival happened in november : Radiolans - The Evolutionary Set.

Radiolans is a project by Medeski, Martin and Wood from 2008/2009. It was a series of three tours, each one centered around new music that would be recorded after beeing played on stage : "The plan: Write > Tour > Record > Repeat."

The three CDs released in 2008 have been compiled on this Evolutionary Set with bonus materials, a remix CD, a live CD, a documentary DVD and a double LP.

I've been looking for this for a good price since its release in 2009 so I was psyched to finally put my hands on it this year. I really like the design of this set and the improvised-feeling of the music.

MMW have been the first band discovered thanks to Phish that I've seen in a concert at the Jazz à Vienne Festival in 2005.

Holly Bowling's Tahoe Tweezer

Last but not least, I received on monday the vinyl version of Holly Bownling's Tahoe Tweezer.

The monstruous jam have been famous in the community since 2013 and althought it didn't impressed me at first (maybe I've over-heard of it before actually listened to it, and I've prefered other jams in 2012/2013 and even more in 2014/2015), I have to admit it's a great piece of music and band/crowd communion.

Classically-trained pianist Holly did a fantastic work as transcribing it to solo piano and, since its debut in 2014, her interpretation has become almost as famous as the original. She hasn't stick with this 35 minutes work and has expand her repertoire with many other Phish songs or jams arranged for solo piano (even my first-show-ever Down with Disease Reading Jam). She started a campaign on Pledge Music in april to gather funds for her first album including songs on the first disc and three jams on the second one. Now she's doing concerts all around the United States and is incorporating Grateful Dead jams to her sets.

I instantly jumped on the "Pleadge" button with a "Shut up and take my money" kind of reaction and received the CDs in late august. Now, the Tahoe Tweezer sits near my turntable on a nice blue 12" disc and I can't wait to make it spin.

You can buy her album and the remaining vinyls (limited to 500 copies) at Royal Potato Family and find her shows on Archive.org.

Siket Disc

The year 2015 will end (or most likely, the year 2016 will begin) with another fine Phish release on vinyl : The Siket Disc.

I didn't expect this one, or at least not that early, but it's a very good surprise ! Those studoi outakes are some of my favorite musics by any artist.

I can't wait to blast What's the Use out loud on my new sound system !

I'm not dead (yet)

by Yome NetSan 2. October 2014

Yes, I'm still here !
Well, kinda... not too far at least.

Two articles since January, I had never been less diligent. The reasons are many: change of pace in my work and in my family life, loss of desire to write while the motivation and topics abound. And indeed, a particular topic blocked me psychologically. I have the will and some "duty" to finish the story of my trip to the United States for those two people waiting. But I want to make it right and it takes time, time that I do not really have or no longer really want to take. And when I want to write about something else, I tell myself that I have to finish this story first... It's a kind of weight that remained on my shoulders all these last months. But don't feel abandonned, I don't write more on my french website Gamusik... But in recent weeks, I resumed writing at times of the day that suit me best: morning and evening on the train, I write on my smartphone with a Bluetooth keyboard. All I'll have to do would be the formatting and adding pictures.

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you know I'm still very active. I have read many books in recent months, I followed a fantastic summer tour, I went to a few concerts (although much less than 2013), I started playing drums (so to speak), I watched the last webcast in the middle of the night, I continue (with some restraint) collectioning retro games and vinyls, I enjoyed the new Phish album, I re-built my childhood LEGOs and I, most importantly, took my back guitar after 10 years !

While you wait for the next part, here is a small selection of what happened in 2014...

Español Pinturas de Fuego - Exploring the Phish spanish theme

by Yome NetSan 16. May 2014

It's no news, the new Phish studio album has been announced back in october 2013 during the Halloween show (more from me about that soon). Tentatively titled Wingsuit, the Phishbill (downloadable here) explained the concept of an album "from the future". The band went in studio with Bob Ezrin in november and the final product, now called Fuego, has been announced last wendesday for a release date on the 24th june.

We can't really talk about the music right now except for what we heard on Haloween and the first song revealed, Waiting all night. In this new song, you can really hear the work done on the sound of the band and the voice harmonies. We also know which songs played in Atlantic City didn't make it to the record. A song like Snow is really difficult to play and sing on stage but can be a lovely tune if worked well in a studio. That's why I personnaly think they would have fit right. I hope for a future b-sides release like Party Time.
Anyway, I'm glade to read that the album will feature guest vocalists and horns. I'm all for a studio album that doesn't sound like the concert. I didn't really enjoyed Joy at the time because the songs were played just like on stage but missed the jams. It seems we won't have such things this time around.

But what stroke me is, of course, the cover art. At first glance, it looks like a photoshoped picture but after a closer look, it's a photo-realistic psychedelic painting of six giant men, standing around an enormous fire explosion in a country landscape. Before you see the tiny houses at the men's feet, you can't have a true sense of the scale of the image.

Paco Pomet 'The test' (Oil on canvas. 80x120cm. 2013)

The original painting is called The Test from the spanish artist Paco Pomet. His web site showcases his surrealistic work in high-resolutions scans. I really like his style, combining vintage-looking black and white imagery with funky colored strange event. As of today, we know he provided two more paitings for the record package and release merchandising (the vinyl record slipmat and the limited litograph). While browsing his gallery, I noticed several other paintings that could fit the theme like Blues and Deserción (2014) or Sin título and La tempestad (2012).

Which ones do you think they'll use ? I'll try to give away a Fuego CD to one of you (randomly picked) who'd make a good guess.
This contest is for European fans only and suggestions must be made in the comments here before the 10th june (or before if the album package is released or leaked prior to this date).

By the way, do you think we have a pattern or a theme here ? Fuego means fire in spanish and we have a spanish painter who likes to put fire explosions on old-looking pictures.

Too bad there won't be a release party in Barcelona this summer...

My oldest Phish T-shirt

by Yome NetSan 2. December 2013

As we celebrate today the 30th anniversary of our favorite band, I wanted to share a quick note about the T-Shirt I wore for my first Phish show.

Remember I told you how I got it and that I didn't know how old it was ?

Well, only two days ago I decided to take pictures of some of my CDs from my collection. Almost all of them are listed on my french website Gamusik but, as it's a long work, there are a lot of missing pictures.

On this morning, I focused on Slip Stitch and PassA Live One and their related promo CDs. I haven't opened the package for years and I watched again the pictures inside the booklet with pleasure. Inside, there is also a "Paid advertisement" leaflet with several merchandising item to order.

And one of them is my mystery Tee !

So now I know it's official, it dates from 1994/1995 and its "name" is "Multimedia Fish on Linen".

I know, I know, it's completly useless, but that's the kind of little things that matter to me...

All new 6-CD box set featuring two complete live shows, recorded July 30, 1997 and July 20, 1998 at Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura, California, a general admission dirt racetrack between the Pacific Coast Highway and Surfers Point Park. Bits of the each show's Soundchecks are included at the end of both shows.

The new box set was fully remixed from the band's multitrack masters and mastered for release. July 30, 1997 was Phish's first Ventura stop since Trey learned to surf nearby in 1993. The show featured a number of must-hear performances including a bass-driven, syncopated "Wolfman's Brother" > "Chalk Dust Torture", a deep and spacey "Stash" and "Character Zero" in Set I. A "Free" > "David Bowie" > "Cities" > "David Bowie" combination dominated the show's second half with some of the summer's biggest jams.

On July 20, 1998 Phish again encountered Ventura's breezy oceanside. Ventura '98 was characterized by some new songs and some bustouts. The first set included a "Bathtub Gin" opener, a new arrangement of "Water In The Sky", the swinging funk of "The Moma Dance" and a "Split Open And Melt" Set I closer. Set II exploded with a bass-and-drums-fueled "Drowned" > "Makisupa Policeman" pairing that utilized Page's synth stylings to seamlessly blend rock and reggae. "Maze" led to a perfectly placed "Sea And Sand".

Digital hunt for analog treasures

by Yome NetSan 1. June 2013

With the Blossom 95 download, the Ventura boxset, Mike Gordon's The Egg and three releases for the Record Store Day, Phish knows how to keep us busy before summer tour !

After going under the rain on the 20th April to my local record store to buy the Pink Floyd's See Emily Play and other french 7", the second part of the treasure hunt began on the Internet. But this year, several surprises made the search more interesting and easier.

The first vinyl to reach my turn table was the vinyl edition of By My Side, a collection of ballads from Ben Harper. I found it in a french web store (Fargo) thanks to a tweet from Planète Vinyle, a french website about wax discs. But it turns out that I was in Morocco by that time and I couldn't order it right away. I had to wait my return to France a week and a half later, hoping that the disc would still be available. Luckly I made the order almost as I stepped of the plane and got my package the week later for a nice price (25€ including 3€ for shipping).

For the next two discs, I had to rely on good old eBay...

Trey Anastasio's Blue Ash And Other Suburbs is a nice looking 7" Picture Disc which also contains brand new music ! So new I couldn't tell by listening t the first instrumental track if I should spin it at 45 or 33RPM !

It seems like it's been limited to 1200 copies so it's no surprise it was not easy to find it a good price.

I finally got it for 38€ (half of this was shipping fees) instead of the original 15$. I know it's almost third time the price but I don't have a lot or choices, especially for shipping.

Same thing for Page McConnell's Unsung Cities and Movies Never Made, instead that it was even more rare (only 1000 copies) and even more musicaly interresting. The only trace of 4 out of the 10 intrumental tracks of the disc can be found on this Film & TV Sampler CD that even the most die-hard US phans haven't heard of... I couldn't find it below 60€, even it sold for 20$ on the day, but I think it was worth it.

The final two discs arrived in my house with the help of very very nice people...

A few weeks before the Record Store Day, I sent a half-joking tweet to the Royal Potato Family, asking the Marco Benevento's record company how a poor french fan could get his hands on the vinyl edition of Invisible Baby. The answer that I didn't expect to have is the one I got : They'll keep one of the only 500 copies for me !
But a month later, I was in contact with then to buy the vinyl at the regular price of 14$ !

Unbelievable !

The last record which came to me (this morning) was ironicaly the most available (7500 copies), the most expensive (50$) but also the most wanted. It's no news that there's a lot of Phish fans in the USA and after releasing the vinyls of The White Tape and Junta in the past years, the expectation for Lawn Boy was rather high.
Like last year, ebay scalpers did their job and I waited for the euphoria to settle down a little.
Meanwhile, Phish released a download of a 1995 concert and announced a 6 CDs boxset of two shows from 1997 and 1998. For such announcement, I usualy got in touch with Beth Montuori Rowles from Phish Inc., who provide me with download codes and review copies. That's how I can set up some contests. I took the opportunity to ask her if she had hold some RSD vinyls and if she could sell me one. The Page's one was so limited that she couldn't hold one but she had Lawn Boy for sell !
A 50$ donation to The Waterwheel Foundation later, the disc was on its way to France... and she even paid for shipping !

So less than a month and a half after Record Store Day, I already found all eight discs I wanted and for far less that last years. As a comparison, I had to wait until October to get my hands on the fifth and final disc of 2012 at a reasonable price. But I am well aware that this year I got the intervention of three lucky stars : Planète Vinyle, Royal Potato Family and Beth.

Thanks to them and see you next year !

Happy New Year ! [UPDATED 2]

On August 11, 1998 Phish played at Star Lake Amphitheatre in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. This was their second visit to Star Lake of seven to-date starting in 1997 and including 2003, 2009 and 2012 shows previously released at LivePhish.com.

The Star Lake 98 show was the 20th of summer to showcase the loose, experimental vibe of a tour that began in Europe and jumped to the United States enroute to the summer’s ending Lemonwheel festival. The introduction of a never-before-played cover each night earned the tour the nickname “summer of covers” from fans and Star Lake’s contribution was a Trench Town Rock opener. Star Lake also saw the return of Time Loves A Hero which was played for the first time in a decade and segued out of a sultry Wolfman’s Brother. Julius, an extended Fee outro (during which hip Pittsburghians clapped along on the 2 and 4) and deep renditions of Maze and Reba set the stage for set II. The second set featured a super-swinging, ethereal Runaway Jim that foreshadowed 2011’s Storage Jam and an unusual pairing of Meat > Limb By Limb. Local flavor of the Commonwealth was provided by Bittersweet Motel (the title of the Phish documentary recorded during Europe ’98 dates) and Wilson, King of Prussia.

Star Lake 98 is the only full show available as video from summer 1998. The 2-DVD set was created from archival VHS videotapes of the 3-camera lawn screen feed. The audio was mixed from multi-track masters in stereo PCM and 5.1 surround. It will be released on DVD and digital audio download December 11 on JEMP Records.

This disc is turned and framed, it's seen much better days

by Yome NetSan 29. October 2012

I think I have a rather big Phish collection but I don't often show the items I buy. So here are some of the last Phish related vinyls and discs I recently received.

The last Marco Benevento record is as good as the previous ones is not better. Moreover Mike Gordon plays bass and mandolin on Escape Horse, a tune already released last year as a limited 7" disc.

Like most of us, I discovered Jennifer Hartswick with TAB, but the girl really need more recognition for his solo work. All of her 3 albums are absolutely great, very jazzy and funky, and her contribution to Everyone Orchestra's first studio album makes it feel like one of her own.

Yes, I finally got my hand on both editions for a resonnable price. The regular one will stay sealed but I opened the other to frame the Pollock print. It looks gorgeous in my living room. The sound of the vinyl is clean and loud. I've re discovered the album with this print.

I've already told about the music before and the packaging of the CD is rather regular.

The last Trey record is a tough one. I'm not really convinced after two listenings but some songs are great like Land of Nod and Scabbard and Clint Eastwood (thank you Jen). The overal sound is a little "over produced" to my ears. I mean that there are too many sounds mixed together and it sounds blury. Trey's voice is often overdubbed or too much reverbed. It's like the opposite of Joy which sounds too much like a live album recorded in studio.

On a side note, you can see that I gave Dry Goods and Music Today a second chance. I recently made several orders with those discs and other items (like this USB flash drive, that Fishman hat, this second edition 12" and a sealed 7" which makes me have another unboxed 7").
The shipping fees are cheaper than before, calculated with more accurency but still rather expensive. The package is also better but I've seen far better (I can compare with a lot of parcels I receive on a regular basis). Finally, the shipping is much faster than before and that's a good thing.
I also have another order on the way for December (Star Lake 98 DVD with CD and T-Shirt along with Fishman's styled mug and bandana) even if I'll have a couple review copies to make another contest.
So, stay tuned for more info about that in the next weeks.

Have you noticed ?

  • After Trey Anastasio's Bar 17 and Phish's Party Time, the next Trey studio album Traveler (announced for the 16th october 2012) will be the third studio album to feature the song Let Me Lie. Each version is different and you can listen to the last one here : http://diffuser.fm/trey-anastasio-let-me-lie/

  • The cover art for Trey's 7" vinyl Scabbard and next LP Traveler can be repeated indefinetly like a wallpaper ! The right border continues on the left side and it's the same for top and bottom. I can't wait to see the bonus 7" !

  • It's the first time that a cover (Clint Eastwood) appears on a Phish or a solo studio album, if you don't count Nothing and Heavy Things that was played by Tom Marshall's Amfibian and Let Me Lie (I wouldn't call them "covers"). Mike Gordon's collaborations with Leo Kottke and Steamroller Wheelies did feature covers but they're not technically "solo records".

  • The album's title track isn't featured in the vinyl version of Traveler while it's in the CD. The full length music shouldn't fit on one disc and that's why there's a bonus 7" disc with this song and Greyhound Rising.

Traveler, Trey's newest studio album, was co-produced with Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Jónsi) at Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT. Musicians include Trey Anastasio Band, Mates of State's Kori Gardner, The National's Bryan Devendorf and Matt Berninger, and Icelandic percussionist Samuli Kosminen.
Pressed on gold colored 180 gram vinyl, the album comes with a Traveler bonus 7" as well as a download card for an MP3 version of the album.
All pre-orders containing the new album will receive one Limited Edition Traveler Lithograph. The print measures 8"x5" and is signed by Trey. All orders will be shipped to protect the LE print.
